The Poldark Show – Stage Hypnotist 3.5***

| On 14, Aug 2024

Poldark is among a select group of naturally gifted hypnotists, bringing over 30 years of performance experience to his Fringe debut.

Initially, I was concerned about the sparse audience turnout, especially since this show relies heavily on audience participation. However, by the time we were seated, there were enough enthusiastic members in the crowd more than willing to volunteer and be part of the show. Despite the smaller audience, Poldark delivered a highly entertaining performance.

He begins by testing the volunteers to see how they respond to hypnosis, as not everyone can be hypnotised. Under his guidance, our volunteers transformed into members of the “Sir Ian McKellen Band,” with those more deeply hypnotised putting on an especially lively performance. One participant, in particular, drummed as if he were part of a major rock band. Throughout the show, Poldark had his volunteers engaged in hilarious antics, all while keeping his promise not to cause them undue embarrassment. For any sceptics in the audience, the show’s finale—where a volunteer, under hypnosis, was balanced like a log across two chairs—was convincing proof of the authenticity of his skills.

It’s unfortunate that the turnout was low, which might be due to the venue’s location, slightly removed from other Fringe venues. However, I can assure you that this wonderful theatre in the heart of Stockbridge is well worth the visit. The area boasts plenty of lovely bars and restaurants, making it a great spot for a night out. This show would be ideal for a group of friends or a work outing, so perhaps a later time slot would draw a bigger crowd. Additionally, the one-hour duration felt a bit short for this type of show, as it understandably takes time for volunteers to get comfortable and enter a hypnotic state.

Overall, this was an entertaining show that I would recommend experiencing.
