Amy – Tears Dry on Their Own 3 1/2 ***

Amy Winehouse was a unique talent and one of the best voices of the early 21st century. The show takes us on a chronological, hour-long journey through her back catalogue, starting with the iconic Back to Black.

Barnsley’s Izzy Watson, lead singer with the band Sonni Mills, is front and centre, filling the room with warmth and works her way through the well-known tracks and deeper cuts. Her voice isn’t trying to mimic Amy fully; instead, she adds her own subtle nuance, and for the most it works beautifully

Watson is equally good with her knowledgeable chat between songs and clearly understands what makes the material work, linking everything together with plenty of affection and superfan guile.

Unfortunately, the show is slightly let down on the technical side, and the mix isn’t quite right, with the vocals sitting too far out front, which hinders the more upbeat numbers like Rehab and Tears Dry on Their Own. It works much better on the softer material, with Stronger Than Me and Love Is a Losing Game creating a more intimate feel, before Our Day Will Come provides a beautiful play-out.

However, the audience absolutely loved it, and it is further proof that Watson is a serious talent. Give her a full band, and this could become something very special indeed.
