Edinburgh comedian graduate Ayo Adenekan is back. He’s been busy too. The comedy award winner has upped sticks, moved to London, and landed a writer’s gig on SNL UK. It’s surprising he’s had the time for a new Fringe show,
A promising start, though; his energy levels are through the roof, and, in essence, the show is a tour of the last twelve months, with a recurring Talking Heads question hanging over him: “How did I get here?”
From his early life of odd jobs (supermarket worker, swimming-centre bouncer, and sandwich shop worker), Adenekan is on great form. The recurring themes of young love, crushes, and coming out to his friends are all handled well, giving Homeland Insecurity an inner warmth and a sense that, throughout, he is bemused by the trajectory his life has taken and the fear of imposter syndrome.
Overall, there’s nothing for him or us to worry about here; there is no difficult second album blues, and Adenekan bloody well blows the doors off. This year though, lightning isn’t so much in a bottle as out in the room, electrifying the audience.
One of the best acts around does it again, and damn, he makes this comedy lark look easy.
