1 Pill, 2 Pill, Red Pill, Blue Pill: A Matrix Parody Musical 4**** - One4Review

In the back of a record shop something is stirring. The Matrix is back, but not as we know it. And Becky Goodman is using every inch of this cupboard space to create a brilliant, DIY-style one-woman show.
The plot? – Typo, a cross between Trinity and Lara Croft with a Neo vocal lilt, sits on the sidelines in a parallel story to the original film, highlighted as the favourite until the new chosen one appears. What follows is rejection, skulduggery and unholy alliances with well-known and secondary characters and, let’s face it, a good old musical singalong.
First, the roots of the show in the Marvel What If? scenario and alternative timeline are right for this type of show, giving it a more flexible path rather than the tired rehash. The ’90s references are fun and not overused.
Technically, it’s a Roger Corman-esque triumph, using very little to make it seem much bigger. Particular shout-outs to the sound and puppets, all pretty much seamlessly handled by Goodman. Audience participation isn’t laboured or lazy, and the bullet-time ballet is a joy too.
The songs are all great, parodying Little Shop of Horrors doo-wop, Hamilton-esque rap (which is surely a Fringe stipulation for any of these types of shows) and even a nod to Supertramp in structure!
Multi-talented Goodman is terrific in these role(s). Her ingenuity, singing, and stage presence are a joy, and one wonders what she could create in a slightly larger venue. Regardless, this show kicks kung fu arse, and this reviewer knows the competition and kung fu.
Take the red or blue pill and enjoy a show that has appeal for fans and non-believers alike, and prepare to witness yet another Free Fringe gem.
