Antigone 3*** - One4Review

After a 2024 Fringe run, Mythography have returned this year with their production of Antigone. Based on Jean Anouilh’s 1940s adaptation of Sophocles’ classic play, the performance captures the hopelessness and destruction of the famous tragedy.
The creative design was remarkable immediately upon entering the dark room. The staging is striking, with plastic sheets obscuring most of the cast and fog travelling the floor as the Chorus performs the opening monologue. The lighting and sound design are perfectly sinister and atmospheric, establishing the tone of the play very well. The choreography of each transition in which the whole chorus moves together on stage is captivating. A clear vision for this production is established by its visuals and sound.
As the central story begins to unfold, the high emotional stakes are immediately obvious from the intensity of the actors’ performances. This intensity is largely maintained throughout in such a way which somewhat limits the emotional scope of the production; at times, it feels the development of the story could benefit from a more nuanced delivery for certain parts of dialogue. There are moments this is done expertly. The supporting cast is particularly noteworthy – Haemon’s scenes are tender, heartbreaking and genuinely moving. On the other end of the spectrum, the First Guard offers a charming and humorous performance that brings levity to a tragic play. Overall, the whole cast did an admirable job and it is obvious they are talented performers with a deep understanding of their characters.
