Finding my Mother's Voice - One4Review

Naava Piatka brings to the Fringe her own personal tribute to her mother, Chayela Rosental, a product of the Vilna Ghetto in Poland who suffered labour camps in Estonia and in Latvia when the ghetto was destroyed by the SS. On her liberation in 1945 she had a successful career as an actress and cabaret singer even performing on Broadway in Yiddish Theatre following onto her emigration to South Africa. Ms Piatka, although born in South Africa moved to the USA in 1977 and only learned much of her mothers history following her death and it inspired this piece to be created in celebration of her mother and the inspiration she still provides to her daughter. The story is told by Naava herself, and through her mother together with some songs accompanied by Lucy Holstedt on piano. It is obviously a project very close to Ms Piatka’s heart and her emotions are very near the surface throughout. A fine performance from a talented actress ***
