Meg and The Magic Toyshop – 3.5***

| On 31, Jul 2025

As you enter Meg and the Magic Toyshop, the floor is covered with a rainbow carpet ready for little ones to sit on, and Penny, the toy soldier, invites them forward. It’s a bright setup, but an unexpected loud bang backstage sends two brave children running back to their parents, not quite the start anyone wanted. The sound remains surprisingly loud at points, especially given the room size, and microphones feel unnecessary. When things get going, Meg (a toy come to life) and her helpful sidekick Penny take children through a simple story of finding Meg’s missing white glove. It’s a colourful affair with box openings that reveal songs, stories and sensory activities for the little ones to get involved in.

This show really is at its best when it gets everyone involved. The rainbow parachute moment is a clear highlight, as children laugh and cheer while making a fish bounce around. Meg’s performance has an energy reminiscent of American morning children’s TV, and there’s a sweet touch of sign language taught for one of the songs. The pacing is gentle, which works for shy children, but it takes until halfway through for most to fully join in. Starting with Meg and Penny already on stage, welcoming children at their level, would likely help settle nerves and pull them into the action earlier.

There is a lot packed into this 40-minute show; it’s closer to a sensory play experience than a fully theatrical piece, but it’s warm, friendly and pitched right for a 2–5-year-old audience. The show is playful and inviting once it finds its rhythm. Meg and the Magic Toyshop is full of heart and energy, and with a few minor tweaks, this is a great way to start your morning at the Fringe with little ones.
