Dean T Beirne: Fated to Pretend (WIP) 3*** - One4Review
one4review | On 24, Aug 2025
Born in Aberdeen, Dean T Beirne is a talent across many fields. He describes himself as the kind of guy who should be running a comic shop in The Simpsons — nerd credentials firmly intact — and it’s a solid start that quickly wins the room. From there he riffs on gym memberships, his dislike of football, and his hilariously awkward attempts to “Borg-assimilate” with his mates. It’s sharp, character-driven stuff, and the laughs come quickly.
His story is, at its heart, a journey. Moving into foster care — which he likens to a Monopoly board — he skewers the lack of orphan role models with a brilliant series of barbs. A later move to Dubai provides another seam: he describes it as “Paisley with sand,” drops in a surreal Peppa Pig reference, and nails the absurdities of how Dubai kids treat outsiders — particularly when you’re gay.
Elsewhere he vents his annoyance at drama school types, landing some choice digs before pivoting into more serious territory. Here he opens up about the death of his dad, his nomination and performance for BBC Comedy, and the uncomfortable realisation that he wasn’t enjoying it. That leads to bigger questions about life choices and the spirals that follow. It’s in these moments that the show feels less fully formed.
The heavier material is raw and in need of tighter structure, but it’s clear Beirne has the chops to make it land. The first half, lighter and more observational, shows excellent progress and a real knack for delivering barbed but likeable comedy. What’s undeniable is his presence: completely likeable, audience-friendly, and someone you want to root for.
This WIP is more than competent — it not only shows the roots of something worthy, but already has plenty of lush foliage pushing through.
