James Gardner - Jockney Rebel 4**** - One4Review

James Gardner returns to The Fringe with his new show, Jockney Rebel, and it’s a wee smasher! This proud “Weegie”, now living in London delivers a solid, confident performance in a bigger venue at Shaghai at Le Monde.
So, is Glasgow, the friendliest city? Is Edinburgh just too posh? There’s plenty patter flying around between the audience and this very likeable Glasgow lad. He has a keen observational style, that seeks to find the fun in even the darkest of topics. Growing up in Glasgow as a middle child has helped shape his resilience but also fuelled his ambition.
I saw him perform earlier this year when his show was still a “work in progress”, and it’s lovely to see how it’s developed with subtle changes and tweaks to his material. He’s trying to fit in down in London, but making friends at his age can be tricky, even his girlfriend struggles to understand him some of the time.
There’s a real trip down memory lane, first teenage crushes, using the home phone or better still hanging out at the phone box with your mates all remind us of a much simpler time.
Are Glaswegians a lot friendlier? Hear what he has to say about Ally McCoist, then make your own mind up. A very enjoyable show from a rising star in Scottish comedy.
