RapGPT – Apex Hoots – 4**** - One4Review

Saying something genuinely new in audience-participation comedy is a tall order. Most of the time, it’s the same tired formula: in-vogue villains (Trump, Putin), awkward meet-cutes in a pub, or “what are they feeling?” And let’s be honest — beyond a few rare geniuses, it’s largely graduate-student-level cleverness where the audience is expected to play along while rolling their eyes.
Enter RapGPT, where everything you thought you knew about improv is thrown out the window. Australian comedian and rapper Macshane steps on stage armed with a laptop, drum machine, and a chat-randomiser app that lets the audience dictate the chaos. Send in your wildest suggestions via phone, and Macshane must freestyle through the AI’s curveballs in real time. It’s absurd, it’s unpredictable — and it’s glorious.
The premise is simple but electrifying: man versus machine. Macshane, Australia’s ADHD-fuelled rap prodigy, faces off against RapGPT in a high-octane, laugh-out-loud battle of creativity. Highlights include the Roulette segments and the brilliantly deranged Emoji story, all layered over sick beats that keep the energy razor-sharp.
Macshane is a blur of wit and rhythm, lightning-fast rhymes colliding with digital chaos. Every verse is a balancing act of skill, spontaneity, and sheer bravado — a show that is as much about watching human ingenuity dance around AI unpredictability as it is about comedy. And the audience love it.
For anyone who thinks improv is dull, this is the antidote. If this is what AI can do, maybe it’s time we welcomed our future overlords with open arms. A genuine Fringe find — bold, inventive, and unforgettable.
