Susan Harrison: Should I Still Be Doing This? 3***

| On 06, Aug 2025

Ms Harrison wonders, through this show, if she should still be doing this. She looks like she’s enjoying it, and the audience seemed to be too, so the answer would seem to be yes. There is a sense though that Ms Harrison might enjoy it even more if she had some friends: an audience, however willing, without knowledge or training in improv or sketch can’t quite fill the void. Ms Harrison has boundless energy, and great performing skills, but the audience in this performance at least weren’t the right sort of surface for her to bounce of off and gain greater velocity.

The show starts with a lovely piece of comedy which continues onto the stage. A back and forth between two characters would have you believe there are two folk performing, not one, and this is probably the strongest part of the show. It gives us the what of the show, but we never really get a good exploration of the why: what’s your point, caller, what do you want to say; what’s your answer to the question?. While the individual characters are engaging and well-drawn, and excellently performed, they are a little disjointed from each other and anything which could make these elements cohere and become an elevated whole.

As the title suggests, Ms Harrison appears to be a comedian with some life questions, and though we might not get her answer, the show is fun, feel-good journey of discovery to a finale worth waiting for.
