This Is Not About Me – Hannah Caplan and Douglas Clarke-Wood for WoodForge 4****

| On 10, Aug 2025

This Is Not About Me  is a sharp, tender and often very funny two-hander that thrives on the crackling chemistry between Amaia Naima Aguinaga (Grace) and Francis Nunnery (Elis). The pair play long-time friends – and sometime lovers – whose relationship has hit a crisis point. To figure out where it all went wrong, a play is written. What unfolds slips seamlessly between “real life” and the dramatised version of their relationship, but one thing stays constant: the undeniable, complicated love they have for each other.
The joy here is in the push and pull of their relationship. Grace and Elis often disagree on what the “truth” of their story actually is, and watching them wrestle with memory, perception, and pride is riveting. Even in moments of exasperation, there’s warmth – you believe utterly that these two have years of shared history, both glorious and messy.
Clever use of video enhances the story – at times hilariously showing what the characters are thinking as opposed to what they actually say. The shifts between live performance and projected inner thoughts are brilliantly timed and often wickedly funny.
The audience response was electric – laughter, nods of recognition, and a big, warm ovation. A witty, heartfelt piece about love, truth, and the stories we tell ourselves.
