Waiting for Texto 4.5****

Writer and performer Aideen McQueen’s warm welcome to each audience member as they take their seat indicates that they are in safe hands and over the next hour we are charmed and moved in equal measure by her character Lucy. Having connected with Tom on Tinder (definitely a keeper – he has a Tesco Club Card!), Lucy agonises over when he will text her, what should she say in a text to him, and why has he not replied to her text. The stressing over 2 blue ticks struck a chord with much of the audience – we’ve all been there! Her initial façade of a woman who has transformed herself inside and out slowly erodes, revealing her vulnerability. Having bonded with the audience, she constantly asks our advice on what her next move should be with Tom, but texts and calls with friends and family slowly reveal that the bravura face of the good time girl is not all that it seems.

Aideen McQueen gives a stellar performance in this witty and moving play. As a rising star of the comedy scene, her interactions with the audience allow her to expertly adapt the dialogue to raise a laugh, but never making any minor diversions feel forced or unintentional. By the end we are all rooting for Lucy to heal herself and to find some much deserved happiness. I loved this play and can’t wait to see what Aideen writes next. She’s a keeper!
