Celebrating a decade of Fringe appearances, the Inverkeithing Community Big Band returned to the Edinburgh New Town Church with a performance that was as warm-hearted as it was musically impressive. The venue, with its soaring acoustics and intimate charm, provided the perfect backdrop for an afternoon steeped in swing, soul, and celebration.
From the opening number, “Birdland,” the band set a confident tone, launching into an arrangement that immediately had toes tapping. Their repertoire was impressive, covering songs such as “Walk Between the Raindrops” and “Moten Swing.” Each piece was delivered with energy and precision, showcasing the band’s musicality.
What stood out was the absolute professionalism of the ensemble. This is a community band in the truest sense—intergenerational, inclusive, and clearly bonded by a shared love of music. The soloists were a particular highlight, with standout performances from the saxophone and trombone sections. Vocalist Lesley’s rendition of “Old Devil Called Love” was especially well received.
Tom Marshall deserves special mention for his engaging presence and musical direction. The set was well-paced, balancing upbeat swing numbers with more soulful ballads, and peppered with light-hearted commentary that kept the audience smiling between songs. His vocal solo on “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head” was confidently executed and added a personal touch.
The audience responded with enthusiasm throughout, clapping along and clearly enjoying the finale number, “Eye of the Tiger,” which brought the afternoon to a rousing close.
In a festival packed with polished productions and experimental acts, the Inverkeithing Community Big Band offered something refreshingly sincere: a joyful, high-quality performance rooted in community and a deep love of music.
