Dirty Paki Lingerie - One4Review

***

Aizzah Fatima is an actress and writer based in New York. Her solo performance play explores the issues of Pakistani women living in America caught between traditional Islamic culture and western liberal, city culture. Most immigrants come from a rural or small town background which has at its core arranged marriage between a bridegroom and a virgin bride with no resort to divorce if the marriage fails. As such, these circumstances are very similar to the situation in many of Britain’s cities.

Thoughts and attitudes are expressed through six characters ranging from a child of six to a mother in her sixties. Using a green shawl, Aizzah Fatima cleverly morphs into the different characters. The most interesting character is the sexually liberated career woman who knows that, because of her life style, she is unlikely to find a Pakistani husband.

Aizzah Fatima gives a committed performance although there was a degree of repetition and an opportunity to take the play into an area of deeper emotional intensity was missed. Recently, a high profile murder trial in England revealed the difficulty of second or third generation British teenage girls of Pakistani background in terms of the choices they want to make or are forced upon them.
