CHALLENGE – 3***

| On 12, Aug 2024

CHALLENGE presents a unique blend of non-verbal comedy, traditional Japanese sword fighting, and an unexpected appearance by a famous TikToker, @uespiiiiii. The show’s description promises laughter, tears, juggling, and dancing, but what unfolds on stage is nothing short of bizarre.

The show opens with a cloaked figure building a tower out of the letters of the show’s name. Audience participation is encouraged with a quirky challenge involving a Kendama, leading to giggles and light-hearted fun. The energy remains high as the performers engage the audience through mime, dancing, and a variety of unusual routines.

The narrative takes a whimsical turn with a dream sequence featuring laser hands that are more like party blowers than anything threatening. The protagonist battles evil masked men and wins the affections of the damsel, but the striptease sequence feels awkward for the youngest viewers, despite the show’s 0+ age rating. Later on there’s an inappropriate groping scene on a train that doesn’t quite land with the audience, missing the mark on humour and taste. While the bar scene introduces a magician whose routine falls flat, the Kendama routine is again a clear standout, showcasing the talent and creativity the show is capable of delivering.

Despite the show’s promise of magic, the final act leaves the audience in a state of confusion, with the protagonist alone in his video game world, leading to a well-choreographed sword fight. The show’s themes of self-improvement and the importance of challenging oneself are overshadowed by the chaotic storytelling.

CHALLENGE is best suited for a teen audience. Although there are moments of genuine laughter, the show’s surreal narrative and inappropriate scenes make it unsuitable for children under 12 I think. The presence of the TikTok star is a major draw for some, if it was at all advertised and I’m not really sure it was, but the show leaves one feeling more bewildered than entertained.
