Jimmy Vandenberg is a Vietnam veteran who received commendations during his time as a marine. He did not, however, come home to a fanfare. Instead, he was made to feel that his service to the country was something that should never have happened, and now, as he heads towards retirement, all he feels is bitterness.
Richard Vergette is the actor and writer of this heart wrenching play. When he re-enacts Jimmy’s time in Vietnam, he spares no details of the many horrors encountered. Being an orphan raised by his grandmother, Jimmy finds a comradeship with his fellow marines and especially the medic Jesus Alvarado, who saves his life and encourages Jimmy to reconnect with his sweetheart Berniece. However, the horrors on the battlefield and the unsympathetic political landscape at home, create a man at odds with the world. When Donald Trump offers to ‘Make America Great Again’, Jimmy feels that, finally, maybe someone is on his side, but his newfound hope also alienates those he loves best.
This is a beautifully written and acted play. I was moved to tears by Jimmy’s frustration. We may all wonder how sane people can be attracted by Donald Trump’s politics, but this play perfectly illustrates why many can become so dissatisfied with those in power. The ending gives us hope that Jimmy will find a way forward with his life and such is the power of Richard Vergette’s performance, it was almost a shock when he thanked the audience, as himself, at the end of the play. I loved this play, and Richard thoroughly deserves sell out audiences for the rest of the festival.
