Dr Jo Prendergast: Cool Mum 4**** - One4Review

Dr Jo Prendergast: Cool Mum 4****

| On 07, Aug 2024

Finding shows for tweens and teens can be tricky. This is the first comedy show I’ve been able to bring my twelve year along to and she loved it. Dr Jo is a New Zealand based psychiatrist. She is the mother to two teenagers and, luckily for us, is also a comedian. The show takes the form of a personal development seminar for parents of teenagers with the ultimate goal of becoming a ‘cool mum’. Although dads are also allowed.

Dr Jo is wonderful at audience interaction. Throughout the show she asked several members of the audience up on stage to assess their coolness. Audience participation at shows can sometimes feel awkward or embarrassing but Dr Jo treats her audience with kindness whilst still getting a laugh. As part of our journey to coolness we are asked to interpret teenage language and grunts. To help with this, Dr Jo asked us to review pre-recorded scenarios acted out by Dr Jo’s own teenage children. These recordings were my daughters favourite bits and were very funny. Kudos to Dr Jo’s kids for their contribution. The format of a self-help seminar was clever and something a bit different to the usual comedy shows.

The show is held in a smallish room at Gilded Balloon Patter House which suits the show’s intimate seminar style. It is funny but also clean and you could happily take your mum and your older kids. Highly recommended.
