For more than a decade local lad Gareth Waugh has been a major player on the Scottish comedy scene, and elsewhere, often opening for TV comics on their tours. It is not hard to see why; he is definitely a safe pair of hands when it comes to performing really funny material, and this 2024 offering is no exception.
Waugh comes onto his stage and immediately is at home, quietly confident, amiable, relaxed. Initially he does some crowd work, and seems genuinely delighted to chat to individuals, mining laughs along the way.
But he does have a show, and a really good one as well. He relates, often self-deprecating anecdotes, of him growing up, bullied, work experience ‘acquisitions’, his relationship, meeting her parents for the first time, and a lot about February 29th, gradually building the tension layer by layer. He finds laughs in everything, the audience were with him throughout and his likeability factor, together with a delightfully constructed show made this hour pass all too quickly.
Gareth claims to have hated his show just over a month ago. Well let me assure him we, the audience, didn’t. We loved it.
