Why I Stuck a Flare up my Arse for England 4.5**** - One4Review

I have to say I took a punt on this show based solely on the title – why would anybody stick a flare up their arse?
Alex Hill is both the writer and performer in this one man play which explores the exuberance experienced by Billy who is negotiating his relationships with amongst others his Dad, his friend Adam, his girlfriend Daisy – and the Fagin-esque Wine Gum.
Billy takes us down a road where he relates the euphoric highs and crushing lows associated with following his beloved Wimbledon FC. Football violence, and heavy drug and alcohol use ensue. Billy gets caught up in a wave of toxic masculinity – will he get carried away or can he find his way back?
Since watching – this solo performance lives rent free in my head. Alex Hill as Billy demands your attention as he makes best use of the small stage available. He takes you on his rollercoaster ride – he will make you laugh, he will make you think, and you’ll eventually find out why he stuck a flare up his arse for England.
Engaging, heartfelt, passionate, and very, very impressive.
