The Improv All Stars 4**** - One4Review

One hour of completely improvised comedy based on audience suggestions comes with risk. For those easily offended, as a general rule, should avoid improv shows. Every show is different, this is why it is hard to recommend improv shows. One terrible suggestion can completely ruin the rest of the show. That being said, being able to make something funny out of a terrible suggestion is skill. These four comedians certainly have skill!
The cast are made up of four comedians, Ian Coppinger and Stu Murphy are regulars and often have two guest comedians join them. The way all four comics cleverly interact, drop unplanned one liners and develop some sort of a story is just impressive. Plus, it is funny to watch them all laugh at each other while doing this. They effortlessly manage to keep the audience entertained and laughing throughout.
These comics are skilled at using zero props and mime to allow the audience to use their imagination in each skit. There were wild suggestions and many sensible ones which the cast picked from and acted out. When certain genres were suggested, the casts’ ability to morph into this was truly funny and skilled, showing off their adaptability. Being able to make up a scene and keep in sync with the other person can be funny or disastrous but either way, adds to the humour of the show.
One sketch which I found particularly funny was an interrogation on a murder. Stu is sent out the room and the audience was asked for the victim, the place and murder weapon. The remaining cast then had to interrogate Stu, using a vocal charades type approach. He then had to guess who he murdered, where and how. Really funny watching him try to work out the ridiculousness of it all, while laughing himself.
I would recommend this to anyone who is not easily offended. If you don’t want the show to take a silly or sinister direction, get some suggestions ready.
