The Balls of Philadelphia 3*** - One4Review

The Balls of Philadelphia 3***

| On 04, Aug 2024

The description of Danielle Solof’s show in the Fringe guide is one of the most accurate I’ve seen: this show delivers exactly what it says on the tin / in the Programme. This review is unlikely to improve on that description, but for context, Ms Solof met a man, and found coincidences everywhere. The show tells the story of eighteen months falling down a rabbit hole and trying to figure out not so much will-she-won’t-she, but should she?

There are few outright belly-laughs in this show, but that also isn’t the style Ms Solof is presenting – it’s more comedic monologue or traditional storytelling rather than stand up, and it’s definitely got more of the theatre about it than Live at the Apollo. Ms Solof comes on to stage without any introduction as we’re filtering in, and gets going as soon as the door’s shut. There’s no crowd work or audience participation, just a relatively simple story which Ms Solof makes engaging and entertaining with her narrative style and extra bits of information from research studies.

There are good elements here – Ms Solof herself, her narrative skill and her stage presence – but the narrative might benefit from some variation in pace, and perhaps a more conclusive conclusion. However, this is a thoughtful show asking some interesting questions.
