Ironing Board Man 4.5****

In parting, Mr Kamali wishes us ‘good luck explaining’ the show to anyone. And it’s true that trying to explain the plot or the premise probably wouldn’t help anyone, sharing the atmosphere and the emotion might. If you’re prepared to surrender yourself to profound absurdity and embrace it for the joyful nonsense it is, this show is wonderful. Jodi Kamali creates a carefully choreographed chaos, completely committed, and builds pathos and humour in amongst the silliness.

The show is a mash-up of tropes from superhero and romance films. They come together to tell a story with a chaotic plot that’s slickly executed. Songs and sounds create images in your mind that are far more detailed than the most lavishly funded theatre production could create on a stage, reminiscent of the best audio dramas. Mr Kamali himself doesn’t have much dialogue, but the carefully chosen pop songs provide the lines and the emotions, and recorded characters share the exposition (some famous voices here!). Mr Kamali throws himself around the stage and over the audience, manipulating the cast in a ballet of poised and precise ridiculousness. And we haven’t yet mentioned the ironing boards.

Slapstick and delightful, with an ending you won’t see coming, this is a very Fringe-y show, in the best way.
