The Physician of Oz 3.5*** - One4Review

The Physician of Oz 3.5***

| On 06, Aug 2025

A very funny collective of short medical comedy sketches, performed by medical students, on the journey of a junior doctor into the world of Foundation Year. Poking fun at the current NHS crisis, junior doctor strikes and the expectations and stress new doctors find themselves when thrust into the endlessly busy acute healthcare settings.

The background story of ‘Oz’ makes a loose reference to the film/musical that we all know and love. However, all is not what it seems. The story line was confusing but this added to the humour of the show. With exaggerated, well-known stereotypes you do not have to work in the medical field to get the jokes. The show was 45 minutes of constant jokes and anecdotes while highlighting the challenges faced by our new medics daily.

The show was incredibly funny however there appeared to be time pressures so the show felt a bit rushed. The production also experienced some technical difficulties which was a real shame! The cast managed the minimalistic staging well and utilised props to the maximum to produce some very funny visual, imaginative material. The performers showed an array of different talents with some live music and singing abilities. Cleverly thought-out mini sketches, I was laughing throughout.

At the end, the cast revealed they put this together during the holidays. The show has so much potential and possibly with a bit more time, the show could run smoother.

I would recommend this show if you are looking for some slapstick comedy and makes you actually belly laugh.
