Robin Ince – Ice Cream for a Broken Tooth 3.5 *** - One4Review

I didn’t truly know what to expect when attending this gig. Ince is a revered name in some comedy circles, but it was my first time seeing him live…
Robin is the presenter The Infinite Monkey Cage on Radio 4 and a certified poet, he even has the certificate to prove it. He doesn’t conform to the norm at a gig, lights on, curtains open, no mic, okay it isn’t the biggest room, and because he has so many poems at his disposal divided into 4 evelopes that the audience pick at random for the show.
He is a very affable performer, chatting to one and all, introducing each poem with anecdotes about each creation prior to reading it to the sold-out crowd.
Ince loves to name drop too, breakfast with Michael Palin, sharing a jacuzzi with… well I’m not going to give the names away, Billy Bragg, Charlotte Church amongst others. He also expounds on unusual purchases from charity shops and his little bit of fun with them.
Oh and we also get a poem or two accompanied by tap dancing from Jo, a performer he met in a bar.
This was, for me anyway, a very different experience from my usual Fringe shows.
