Jacobite Country - One4Review

Anybody reading the Fringe programme will see this play described as ‘Comedy, Drama’. Well, the silence from the audience says it all as far as the comedy is concerned.

The whole piece is confusing. At the beginning we have aspiring comedian Haggis McSporran (Sarah Haworth) giving the first of several unfunny stand up routines. Is this meant to be deliberate? We move into a mental institution where Haggis is apparently a nurse. Into the action comes Craitur Face (Fiona Morrison), a kind of Jack the Lad. Both male leads you will notice are played by females. Why? The scenes that follow jump around in time and location, and I am trying to make some sense of what is going on. Is Haggis in some kind of surreal existence? Am I missing some significant symbolism about being Scottish? I really don’t know. What I do know is that the attempts at humour in the script are falling flat.

Full credit to the two leads for giving their all but at the end I could sense I was not the only person in the tiny audience who left bemused and disappointed.
