Gruffalos, Ladybirds and Other Beasts - with Julia Donaldson 5***** - One4Review

Anyone who has had children in the past fifteen years will without a doubt have read one of Julia Donaldson’s wonderful children’s books. In this fantastic production, five of Julia’s best loved books are brought to life in the Udderbelly.

Julia herself, along with her husband Malcom, sister Mary and two actors, act out the stories of Jack and the Flum Flum Tree, Zog, What the Ladybird Heard, A Squash and a Squeeze, and, of course, The Gruffalo.

The cast did a fantastic job of re-enacting the stories, bearing in mind that only two out of the five cast are professional actors. There was the odd moment of miss-timing but this did not detract from the overall experience. Special mention to Julia’s husband Malcom who threw himself into each part and was a joy to watch.

There was audience participation with children asked to come on stage, and as the books are so familiar (I hate to think how many times I have read The Gruffalo) almost all of the children were joining in with the story.

The show is aimed at children aged four and over, but there were plenty of toddlers who were enjoying it. Its an hour long but certainly didn’t seam it.

Overall a fantastic children’s show, and thoroughly recommended – the highlight of my Fringe so far.
