Fur Elise – York Drama Soc 3***

| On 06, Aug 2016

Fur Elise is a mimed drama by the young and enthusiastic York Drama Soc. It’s a tale of love found and lost, narrated in French, but translated into English for the audience to comedic effect. The main characters are Francois and Elise. Francois is a poor mime artist, unlucky in love who has the fortune, or misfortune, to meet and fall in love with Elise. Elise is in an unhappy relationship and desperate to find happiness. The drama charts their love story from the beginning to its end. The ‘supporting’ group of actors scurry around the main characters, becoming a passer-by, a piece of furniture, and in one case, an amusing fountain, as the play requires. This is done to great effect by all concerned with the flickering fire deserving a special mention. The soundtrack to the action is impeccable, adding nuance to the drama unfolding in front of us.
This was a confident and enjoyable production. I just wish it could have lasted a bit longer as the ending did feel slightly abrupt but maybe it’s always better to leave the audience wanting more.
