Aria Entertainment and Flying Music: The Toxic Avenger, 4 stars ****

If you mix Little Shop of Horrors with Bat Boy, Rocky Horror and Urinetown you will get a good idea of what this show is aiming for. It’s fast, funny and must have one of the highest production values of any show at the Fringe this year. The set is large and detailed, there are costumes galore, great lighting and a live band all supported by excellent direction and choreography.

The vocals were simply outstanding from everyone, the vocal ranges simply immense! Comic timing was excellent, especially from the two ‘supporting actors’ who played everyone in the show other than the three main people, fantastic work. But the whole cast were working very hard and it showed, very impressive.

The music, whilst not particularly memorable, was very well performed and the live band behind the set were so tight I could have sworn they were using backing tracks. But this was the start of the main problem – the show was incredibly loud making lots of the song lyrics simply incomprehensible. It was actually painful to listen to and I wasn’t even at the front. It was louder than Creatives and that was also too loud, maybe this is a venue issue? Either way, when you can’t shout to the person next to you and you leave a show with your ears ringing then it’s too loud and surely needs checked.

But otherwise an enjoyable if frivolous romp by a supremely talented cast.
