Aloft Presents Sanctuary – 3***

| On 08, Aug 2023

Sanctuary dives into the world of punk-rock circus cabaret with gusto and flair. However, while it promises to be a medley of heartfelt performances and underground circus spectacle, it sometimes loses its footing.

From the moment you step in, the atmosphere is palpable. The melancholic melody of Don’t Leave Me sets the mood, followed by a tightrope act that is both sensual and captivating. But it’s clear from early on that the transitions need tightening. The song interludes seem to dawdle, often stretching the patience of an audience eager for circus thrills. One might wonder if they’ve stepped into a musical revue instead of a cabaret circus.

Our sparkling compère, glittering in gold, offers lively patter with the audience but occasionally feels over-present, taking up more of the spotlight than some might prefer. Her multiple costume changes, while eye-catching, tend to overshadow the raw talent of the performers.

Then, there’s the juggler, whose comedic act could have been a show-stealer. Unfortunately, his numerous missteps perhaps attributed to pre-show indulgences make the act feel more slapdash than slapstick. In a setting where precision is key, his lack of polish is hard to overlook.

The solo artist’s aerial work on silks and the tightrope walker’s second act on a swing bar do bring the audience back, showcasing what Sanctuary Cabaret can truly offer. The finale has an entanglement, while perhaps unintentional, casts a shadow of genuine concern, momentarily dispelling the show’s magic.

In essence, while Sanctuary Cabaret does have its moments of raw talent and heart, it struggles to maintain a consistent rhythm, sometimes leaving the audience desiring more cohesion and polish. For a show with such high aspirations, it teeters between moments of brilliance and stretches of mediocrity. If it can trim its excesses and shine a spotlight on its core strengths, it could truly become the cabaret sensation it aspires to be. But for now, its inconsistencies overshadow its potential brilliance.
