Ginava’s Messy Friends – 4.5 stars

| On 07, Aug 2023

Ginava’s Messy Friends is a glittering abundance of outrageous drag, outstanding burlesque and powerful and potent choreography. The soundtrack throbs as we are immersed in this alternative universe of drag, a mesmerising spectrum far from the mainstream norms.

The show begins with a warning about the adult content and language “if you don’t like that, get out!” setting us up for the unapologetic show to come. This doesn’t seem like just a show but a statement to challenge norms and create a potent discussion on the queer narrative that resonates with not only depth but clarity.

In an unexpected twist, we see our performers removed from their stage personas as we get video interludes of a podcast-style setting. This element allows us a more intimate backstage pass that helps us connect deeper with our cast on a personal level, adding a more human connection to artists we then get to meet and better understand. I think without these this is a cabaret show but with this added all performances suddenly have a lot more meaning and allow us to understand not only what we are watching, but why.

Whether it’s the stunning robotic half snake, half widowmaker burlesque performance to Bjork’s ‘Human Behaviour’ that looks at the shedding of our skin to the death-dropping, gasp-inducing and all-around heart-stopping spectacle of a lip-sync assassination, these showcases of talent will leave you constantly dripping with anticipation for what’s next.

Costumes range from the fabulously grotesque to the beautifully alluring, a visual feast. Each outfit adds another layer to the performance, further blurring the line between reality and fantasy. I was particularly drawn to the pieces that featured more monstrous moments.

Ginava’s Messy Friends serves us as a boundary-pushing showcase that challenges expectations and leaves the audience yearning for more. Despite the show’s title, there’s nothing messy about this tight, choreographed hour. This isn’t your usual drag show – it’s an unforgettable exploration of identity and performance. Unmasking the artists in such a way provides a truly unique drag experience that absolutely must be seen.
