Bella Humphries: Square Peg 3*** - One4Review
one4review | On 07, Aug 2024
This was a show of two parts, though Bella Humphries’ massive smile and hugely expressive face is ever present. The initial part of the show, the sort of getting to know you bit, delivered solid observational stand up material. Solid stuff, but I felt a little like Ms Humphries felt she needed to make us laugh continually. The second part, with material that she’s passionate about, and in which she found her rhythm and groove, was excellent: funny, informative, and even occasionally frustrating or a bit sad.
As well as that expressive face, Ms Humphries movement is notable: her comedy is enhanced by the fact that – where appropriate – she doesn’t simply stand and talk, but shows us, with full body movements that really convey the experience, even if you can’t personally relate.
Structurally, things are sound. Comedically, things vary, but there is one joke which references a hot dog, and it was a delight to hear the whole audience laugh, but then realise that one demographic were still laughing, and a wee bit poorless with it. I’m really enjoying seeing women doing comedy, and Bella is a passionate and funny addition to the ranks.
