A beautiful piece of musical theatre conceived by Audible, the award-winning producers of Fleabag and Baby Reindeer, I’m Almost There is a modern love story told in song and dialogue with piano, harp and bass guitar accompaniment.

New Yorker, Todd Almond sits at the piano and musically recounts his tale about meeting the perfect man at a brunch he is dragged along to in New York’s Tribeca. He instantly knows that this stranger is the man for him, and the feeling seems to be mutual, but things don’t quite work out on that first date. When, the following day, the stranger arrives at the front door with two coffees in hand, everything seems to be back on track. However, in trying to get down to the front door, Almond tells us how he is thwarted in a vaguely Odyssean way by various of his neighbours, including a ‘crazy woman’ looking for her cat, who is the daughter on the building manager, a ‘sexy beast’ of a man across the stairwell, a self-obsessed vampire and the sister of the crazy woman who inveigles him into a cult. When finally he meets a cat, intent on dragging him down to hell, things really take a turn for the macabre.

Almond is accompanied by Erin Hill on the harp, who superbly plays the part of the crazy cat woman, and Lucas Macrosson on bass guitar. The performance is an engaging and compelling hour of Fringe theatre, which had the audience in the packed-out Main Hall captivated, and the standing ovation at the end was well-deserved. I would highly recommend catching this show before it completely sells out.
