Jonny and the Baptists: The Happiness Index 3*** - One4Review

How to describe this show… In 2010 David Cameron was Prime Minister and he was interested in quantifying the happiness of the nation. Our two on stage performers have picked up this idea and used it as the loose basis of their show. Both of the performers are ‘neuro delightful’, Jonny having an ADHD diagnosis and Paddy a long history of depression. There were some really good parts of this show, particularly the song dedicated to the various anti-depressants Paddy has been prescribed over the years whilst still being on the waiting list for talk therapy. The duo made us laugh at some really serious issues, such as parental death, the struggling NHS and the arts council funding.
The show was a bit chaotic though and at times I wondered what on earth was going on. The main reason for losing stars however is that the show was advertised as being suitable for kids aged 12 and over and it really was not. There were several jokes regarding David Cameron and a pig (some difficult questions after this) and lots of use of the C word. Perhaps this was an oversight by the fringe organisers but if I feel the age rating should be upped to 16. Jonny and Paddy are obviously talented and committed performers but overall I feel this show is for an older audience.
