Stephanie Laing: Rudder 4**** - One4Review

Stephanie Laing: Rudder 4****

| On 04, Aug 2024

Stephanie Laing could probably read the shipping forecast and make an amazing show, she’s got such warmth and confidence and presence. And just the right amount of filth. There’s a bit of audience participation in this show, but definitely don’t let that put you off because Ms Laing’s experience and general good vibes means she holds the space and makes participation safe rather than nerve-wracking.

Ms Laing’s happy, she tells us, and it shines throughout this show. It’s a delight to watch any person who’s really good a thing do that thing really well, and enjoy it. Whether it’s the choice bits of silliness and filth, or the stories about her new man or the tattoo on her arm, Ms Laing seems happy in her own skin, and willing to spread the joy around.

In more concrete terms, the show is the product of some Arts Council funding Stephanie received to learn to dance. We’re thus treated (and they are a treat; they do exactly what she wants them to do, and they’re lovely) to five dances interspersed with stories and stand up. There’s a lovely progression through the show, with good pacing and variations in tone. Her crowd work is friendly, and the show is well constructed and engaging. A lovely performer with properly funny material and good vibes.
