Using just one rope to accomplish a simply incredible range of physical feats, By A Thread is a light-hearted yet at times intimate take on circus performance. From skilfully spinning through the air to tightrope-style walks and gravity-defying holds, the performers from One Fell Swoop Circus climb, twist, and balance in ways that appear nearly impossible.

There is a constant showcase of strength on display; they tussle for position on the rope, which is genuinely funny and thrilling in equal measure. When the tone, music, and lighting bring the piece to a more personal place, we all welcome the pace change, and although there isn’t an overarching theme, this is easily one of the best pieces of physical theatre on display at the Fringe.

There is a superb level of teamwork involved. While one of the talents climbs to dizzying heights, the others act as the ‘base,’ anchoring the rope down. It’s a sense of connection and trust; you don’t dare look away. There is a constant relational feel between the climber and their support; they must trust each other with everything they have, and that makes for a captivating piece of aerial acrobatics.

By A Thread’s ability to blend tender moments with bold physicality is what makes it unique. Intimacy is created between the performers through brief touches and shared balances, while playful rope skipping transitions into complex, suspended poses that resemble dance. It’s about relationships, trust, and the joy of movement, not just tricks. This performance is a creative and heartfelt exploration of what seven people and a single rope can accomplish when they work together as one, and audiences find it both touching and thrilling.
