Caroline McEvoy: Train Man 3*** - One4Review

Neurodiversity has become more visible and better understood – especially in the arts – and this show picks up on that theme, but from a slightly different perspective. Caroline’s younger brother has autism, and her story of growing up together is both entertaining and enlightening. It’s a really lovely coounterpart to the first-person experiences.
Caroline nudged us into a more homogenously-shaped audience with some gentle miming which predisposed us to like an already likeable performer. The show is towards the storytelling-and-performance end of comedy, rather than stand up, so while it’s not continuous laughter, it is continually entertaining. Caroline seems to genuinely like and get on with her brother – more so than her partner who is the butt of some brutal put-downs (but also a couple of hilarious punchlines) – as well as care deeply enough to get properly angry with how society works sometimes.
Caroline’s an engaging performer, building rapport with the audience without requiring anything so terrifying as participation or conversation. This is a tale of her own experience, and she does a lovely job of showing the opposing pulls of concern for her brother and sibling rivalry. She also has a great singing voice, and her brother’s character development is mirrored by her own. A lovely show.
