Nathan Cassidy – It’s Not the End of the World 4 ½ **** - One4Review

I joined a packed-out show at the Counting House on a Sunday evening, thinking wow, this should be a cracker, already knowing that Nathan Cassidy was a well-respected, award-winning comedian. Strap yourself in.
Cassidy, a very personable comic took to the stage doing a little crowd work to discover ‘who was in’, and it soon became evident that nearly 75% had English as a second language. They enjoyed themselves thoroughly but some of the UK centric parts of the material had little resonance to them.
Nathan explained the usual breakdown of the hour was going to be tweaked in this show, which it was, and worked well especially with some of his material.
There are stories about East 17, Linda De Sousa Abreu and her relationships with inmates, tramps, Stonehenge, Paris v Blackpool, politics, WW3, and cheesy TV quiz shows and questions of ‘what is love’, each well-crafted and written and delivered with style.
The most heart felt material were contained in the deterioration of his stepfather with dementia, and his need for care, provided by his mother and Nathan himself. The only political party who seems interested in unpaid carers are not in power, or likely to be.
I would really have liked to see this show with an audience who fully appreciated more of the more ‘local’ references and gave an excellent comedian the full laughter he really deserved.
