What’s great about this show is how it’s a great cycle of mini-acts: trick shots, expert circus skills, and playful set pieces that bring utter joy. All of this is driven, somehow, by a brilliantly unassuming and sweet non-verbal clown, Darryl J Carrington. Using everyday objects, nothing can escape becoming a ‘small marvel’ through this brilliant physical comedy. What you may not know but will by the end of this is that Carrington is Circomedia trained and has over 20 years of performance experience; he takes his audience through a joyous ride, and all those years of experience are showcased in a show that must be seen. One thing I absolutely adored about this show was the kind and embarrassment-free approach taken, inviting audience members to share the spotlight and never become a punchline.
There’s a warm, wonderful feeling in the room that simply works for kids and adults alike. As there are no words in this show, the focus is completely on the skills and the laughs, and they are constant. We giggle at how playful and silly it all is, and then we gasp at how skilful Carrington is; it’s exceptional to watch, and I can’t recommend this show enough for the whole family. As the title of the show suggests, there is a large box on stage, and as the lid lifts, suspense builds. What’s coming next? It’s a series of beanies, small dogs, juggling clubs, and more beanies, and as more audience members get involved, there is always a guided and safe feeling; this builds a lot of trust in the room.
This show has precision juggling, inventive prop work and a super inclusive spirit! Carrington is all about inclusivity, and it shows; he wants to connect to his audience with small nods, smiles and mime that always land well. Sprinkle a bit of this type of clown on anything, and it’ll work wonders! The hour flies by, and you’ll leave knowing you saw one of the best things at the Fringe.
