Madwomen In The Attic – Plain Heroines****

| On 11, Aug 2016

Madwomen in The Attic is inspired by the Bronte sister novels and the setting is a weekly help group for women who have experienced domestic violence. They are led by Jane who is painfully ineffectual in her attempts to help the group members who have experienced mental and physical torture at the hands of the partners.
Although this sounds a recipe for a heart breaking hour, this is an exhilarating performance by all concerned. The script is full of humour and all the young cast give fantastic performances. Between each session we have the added treat of listening to the karaoke loving Grace – a warden from a psychiatric hospital who exudes boredom and disdain with every pore but comes alight in front of a microphone. If you love the Brontes you will love the references throughout the play, but even if you’re not a fan you will find much to enjoy in this accomplished piece of theatre.
