Camille O’Sullivan - Love letter 4**** - One4Review
one4review | On 16, Aug 2024
For those Camille fans, who attend every year she graces the Fringe, the 2024 version will be slightly different than the usual fare.
This is not ‘another’ show. This is her homage to two friends who are no longer with us, people she admired growing up, who became colleagues and subsequently friends, namely Shane McGowan and Sinead O’Connor.
Accompanied by her ever-present keyboard player and singer Fergal Murray, the concept of the celebration of words was floated as Camille gave her interpretation of several songs of theirs, linking with slightly longer anecdotes than is normally part of her performance in this celebration of their lives.
Camille’s performances are always very personal, this more so than ever, she appears at times to be looser than ever. The sound where I was sitting was excellent, but ever the perfectionist in this matter, tweaks were required to satisfy her.
A few of her favourite artists, McGowan’s friend Nick Cave, along with Dillie Keane, David Bowie and Leonard Cohen also have numbers featured, all given the O’Sullivan arrangement.
This would not necessarily be the best introduction for anyone seeing her for the first time. She is usually slightly more accessible, but if you were a fan of Shane McGowan and Sinead O’Connor or Camille O’Sullivan then this could be the very show for you.
