Jessie Cave -Ecstatic Display 3***

| On 14, Aug 2024

The vast stage in Assembly Roxy is preset with many props, including a shadow puppet display I was wondering what we were in for.
Jessie Cave enters somewhat awkwardly, not for her the sass many stand-ups have, explains that she has been away for a number of years and has much to showcase.
There is shadow puppetry, crowd work dance, Shakespeare, acting out interactions assisted as a mock-up of her partner, talking of her possible addiction childbirth, reading an oversized book to her children, she has four kids with on and off partner comedian Alfie Brown, a description of a bikini wax, so much is happening to her that is chaotic, no wonder she is under pressure.
There is in my opinion too much crammed into this show, maybe symptomatic of her life, but at times the transitions between the segments were clunky and maybe a little less content and more time developing the flow would have made it a more pleasing experience.
There is no doubt that Jessie has an appeal. She is awkwardly entertaining and generally went down well with her large audience. There is also elements of vulnerability that gets one rooting for her too.
