Agnes Carter and Gita Blaze: Magic Mushrooms 4**** - One4Review

Agnes Carter and Gita Blaze: Magic Mushrooms 4****

| On 03, Aug 2025

A lovely morning spent in the company of two rising stars of stand-up. A Fringe tonic — with oat milk if you want it.
11am isn’t exactly comedy’s golden hour. Tucked just off the Royal Mile, at the back of a record shop that smells faintly of cold brew and cracked vinyl, you might assume you’re heading to an indie listening party. But instead, you’re being gently and joyfully ambushed by two smart, funny voices with plenty to say.
Magic Mushrooms is a relaxed, well-curated double bill themed around “everyday magic” — the strange, sparkly little moments that keep us human in increasingly ridiculous times. And it works beautifully.
First up is Latvian-born, Glasgow-based Gita Blaze — and let’s be clear: Glasgow doesn’t just run in her veins, it absolutely gallops. Warm, deadpan and whip-smart, Blaze spins charming, finely observed material about learning English via Glasgow taxi drivers, navigating ceilidh dancing as an outsider, and surviving modern dating. There’s something satisfyingly mischievous in her delivery — a sort of “I know what I’m doing and I know you know” quality — that makes her a real joy to watch. One to seriously keep an eye on.
Then comes Agnes Carter, who delivers a slightly longer set — and what a find she is. Young, expressive, and quietly assured, Carter brings the Fringe spirit to life with a show that blends parody, pathos, and just enough weirdness to keep you guessing. There’s roleplay, ASMR, Catholic guilt, a surreal detour into AI-assisted love, and a truly inspired sports/emotion metaphor that absolutely slays. The writing is sharp, the concepts layered, and you get the sense she’s barely scratched the surface. There’s real comic potential here, ready to bloom in bigger venues.
Together, the pair deliver a show that’s light on ego, big on craft. It’s funny, fresh, and full of Fringe generosity — exactly the kind of unexpected joy you want from a free morning show. They may not be household names yet, but on this evidence, both Blaze and Carter are heading places.
Bring your coffee, bring your curiosity, and let these two magic mushrooms lift your morning.
