Lorna Rose Treen: 24 Hour Diner People 4**** - One4Review

Lorna Rose Treen seems like she’s having a really good time performing this show, and it’s quite infectious. Though she pulls in members of the audience to – almost literally – be her stooges – the only reason these characters are not also blow up dolls (like the one that intermittently stands in for Lorna Rose) is that they have lines to say. Otherwise, Lorna Rose would be entirely happy playing out her absurd, ridiculous, daft – even ‘stupid’, as she says – story all by herself, occasionally breaking the fourth wall to explain, or give context, or make sure we’re keeping up. It’s a riot, and it’s very fun.
And though it’s a riot, it’s a very carefully crafted one. Watch the timings: the costume change is finished precisely as the radio recording does, the speech reaches its climax perfectly in line with the music. Examine the costumes: created exactly for the show, not bought; handmade, not home made. They’ll still be around at the end of the month. The accents don’t waver. Characters finish their narrative arc. Lorna Rose is the conductor of Fantasia, but an experienced one who can keep control of all the elements while still allowing them to dance.
Lorna Rose seems delighted and shocked (I’m not) that this run is almost sold out, and they’re putting on extra shows. A comedian who feels like they’re also having a good time will always be a hit, and if you can get a ticket, this hour of playful comic theatre is well worth your time.
