Mojo and Jimmy: The Totally Awesome Magic Show is exactly what you need to bring a smile to that young person in your life. Before we’ve even got into the venue, we’re given a flag to wave, and that’s a nice touch to keep little hands entertained in a rather large queue. The show takes place in a magical forest, and we’re quickly introduced to Mojo, the magical monkey, and Jimmy, a real-life-sized tomato sidekick, as they try and save HappyVale. Audience participation is a constant and overall key element to the show, with children and parents alike getting in on the action. Whether it’s children brought up for some magic fun or Jimmy diving into the audience to get them involved, the magic fills the rooms. There’s some creative illusion magic and even a teleporting (sort of) dad!

There’s a constant high energy, and we’re invited to be involved from the off. It’s never too chaotic, and you’re taken on the journey at a pace that feels playful but railroaded, so we know we’re in safe hands. Mojo and Jimmy have great chemistry, and although everything feels like a slick and well-rehearsed production to the adults, it will come across as a good mix of slapstick and storytelling to the children with lots of fun magic throughout.

There are some fantastic moments that really made me laugh (projectile tomato vomiting) and had the kids howling with “She’s so silly.” There’s the perfect mix of magic, comedy, interesting visuals and story to give you everything you want for a day at the theatre with the children. Arguably this isn’t a Fringe show in the truest sense, as it’s clearly a slick production with goody bags on sale at the end. If you want a safe banker on your list and have children aged 5-10, you can’t go wrong here.
