jessica aszkenasy: TITCLOWN 4.5****

| On 09, Aug 2025

TITCLOWN bounces backwards and forwards over the line of art-or-not. It could be, in much the same spirit as Duchamp’s Fountain. Jessica claims it is, and for some definitions of art, that’s all it takes. What it definitely is is hysterically funny. The discomfort of some audients (who thankfully left before they were ejected; their discomfort prompting them to behaviour indecorous for a comedy show) only served to make it funnier. Free-range boobs are just too much for some.

TITCLOWN is a says-it-on-the-tin sort of title. There are tits, and Jessica’s comedy is quite a lot of clown. We start off with call-and-response boob wiggling (encased), progress through some shoes, make-up and it generally descends into art from there. Copious amounts of red paint is used. Visuals evocative of Warhol’s pop art provide a backdrop. There are some really lovely wings, and a mildly disconcerting use of electrical tape.

Jessica seems to be having a really good time through all of this. She revels in making things awkward, which, strangely, seemed to be worse for the men than the women. She’s utterly committed and utterly body confident, and a little mischievous-verging-on-devilish with it in the process. If you hate this sort of thing, you won’t enjoy this show. Jessica doesn’t care. If this is your jam, this is definitely art. C’est la Fringe!
