Steel Magnolias - One4Review

With the current vogue in staging plays based on major movies, it is no real surprise that this ‘Chick-Flick’ has also had the treatment. This play written by Robert Harling, is set in Truvy’s beauty parlour, set in a small town in Louisiana, and opens on the wedding day of Shelby and she, together with her mother and two friends are getting their hair done by Truvy and her new assistant Annelle. Over full four acts of this play, the time lapses and situations change, and those who know the film will be well aware of the finale. These six roles are played by Rebecca Bond, Annabel Dewilde Gordon, Marie McNulty, Deirdre Mullins, Rosie Oliphant and Annika Ostman and each actor plays their role with style and class. This is unusual for the Fringe in that the play lasts 2 hours and even has a brief interval, but it requires that time to do justice to this fine piece of writing and to get full benefit of the direction and performances. Okay, this is a staged chick flick, but I can recommend it to anyone, and I defy even the most cynical bloke not to have a small lump in their throat before the end. *****
