I am my own Wife - One4Review

Kevin Loreque gives a masterly performance in this one man play. There are essentially two characters, the writer Doug Wright and German transvestite Charlotte von Mahlsdorf. The two characters, although born in different continents and in different eras, shared to some extent a common sexuality. Wright had to cope with the difficulty of being a homosexual from the American bible belt, whilst von Mahlsdorf, who was born in the late 1920’s, amazingly survived living in Berlin through the Nazi and Communist periods. The play is set in Berlin in the early 1990’s after the collapse of the East German regime. Through conversation and interview Wright pieces together von Mahsdorf’s complex life story. My only criticism is that it is over fussy in the factual presentation and halfway through the play tends to lose focus. Nevertheless, the ending brings a dramatic closure. ***
