Christiaan Oranje: Boy Meets Piano - One4Review
Christiaan Oranje charts an autobiographical journey trying to find his distinctive place as a pianist and composer. He literally starts with his birth as he blends words with musical accompaniment. From this comic opening, he traces his development through childhood into manhood. The tone takes on a more sombre mood as his failure to find a personally satisfying musical expression overwhelms his life. Nevertheless, he still has a dream and in his finale he plays a beautiful lyrical piece which gives him the fulfillment he craves. The overall impression I am left with is that as a performance it doesn’t quite come off. The comedy wasn’t sustained after the opening sequence and the drama of his desperate search for fulfillment didn’t grip with tension. However, there is no doubting the quality of his musicianship. ***
