Heroin(e) For Breakfast - One4Review

I must admit this play didn’t originally make my shortlist, but I was persuaded to go and see it following recommendations by friends. Set in a dowdy rundown flat, Tommy, Craig McArdle, and his flatmate and ex- Chloe, Kirsty Green awake after a heavy night on God knows what, and before long are joined by Tommy’s current partner, sixth form student Edie, Kate Daley. There is obvious conflict between the girls and why is revealed later. So far so good, but it is hardly ground breaking until the entry of Heroin(e) Hayley Shilito, and after that I began to understand what the fuss was being made about. All four actors turn in excellent performances, but then having seen the company before I expected nothing less, the direction by writer Philip Stokes was really good, and after 15 minutes the script was spot on too. For me however it took too long to reach the standard I have come to expect from this company. This show is doing excellent business, so my advice is to get your ticket whilst there are some available, and stick with it, it becomes really an intense, comically dark at times play that really should be witnessed.   ****
